Meet The Face Behind Headwaters Bookkeeping Services

I’m Janet Nieuwenhuis, the proud owner of Headwaters Bookkeeping Services. I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.

I have been a bookkeeper since graduating from Fanshawe College in 1981, working with a chartered accountant until the practice sold. Rather than try and find another job, I struck out on my own, starting Headwaters Bookkeeping Services on June 16th, 2009, the day after the income tax return filing deadline for proprietors.

How have things changed, you ask? The need for competent record-keeping is greater than ever. Government regulations and remittance requirements are more demanding than in times past. At the same time, the bookkeeping trade has its own Professional Bookkeeping Association, which has helped foster a more professional approach for people in the field—the Certified Professional Bookkeepers of Canada (CPB).

Over the years, the rewards I enjoy the most are when my customer understands and appreciates the value I bring to the relationship. As a Christian, I believe that my work is not just for myself but is done in service to God. My service is also meant to benefit my community, both locally and further abroad.

Why I’ve been successful

As an individual, what sets me apart from others is I believe in honesty and hard work. When I commit to a bookkeeping engagement, I will do my best to ensure the job gets done accurately and on time.

I attribute my success to God’s blessing. I have been in good health and have been able to carry out my work to the satisfaction of my customers. They are happy with my work, and I regularly get referrals from them and other professionals in the area,

Starting my own business was very satisfying, and I haven’t been sorry that I took that step. My ongoing customer relationships, some of them as long as I have been in business, have been enriching as we worked together in a mutually successful way.

During my downtime

When I am not at work, I like to read, take walks with my husband and swim together. We also go camping with family and worship every Sunday with our fellow believers. Both my husband and I feel eager to support those in our Church and the broader community in any way we can.
